Developing techniques for effective informational and argumentative writing is a crucial life skill. This type of writing most directly relates to the writing that our business lives and personal lives require. When we feel confident about our ability to plan, produce, and revise and edit our writings, the chances of getting good grades and succeeding in all major content areas dramatically improves.
All informational/argumentative writing is primarily scored using three basic criteria:

  1. Present facts/arguments/details/examples clearly
  2. Display analytical thought
  3. Follow the rules of good writing

Informative/Argumentative Writing can be organized into three basic parts:

  1. Introduction – which often includes a brief overview of points to be presented
  2. Body – where major points are developed
  3. Conclusion – that summarizes the information or calls forth some action

The body of the writing should include:

  1. Three examples
  2. Three arguments / three justifications
  3. Three compelling reasons

Honoring once again “The Power of Three”

TIP

Most of us have been taught strategies for the Five Paragraph Writing. However, we suggest a more flexible approach. For example, some supporting evidence may require more than one paragraph. Consequently, the body may require more details. All writing varies in purpose and intent. What is most essential is a display of solid analytical thought that does not match a prescribed length.
